Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor.


Lipirex oral tablets contain 10, 20 or 40 mg atorvastatin.


Lipirex is indicated as an adjunct to diet for the reduction of elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglycerides and to increase HDL cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, and combined (mixed) hyperlipidemia (Fredrickson types lla and llb). Lipirex is indicated as an adjunct to diet for the treatment of patients with elevated serum triglyceride levels (Fredrickson type IV), and for the treatment of patients with dysbetalipoproteinemia (Fredrickson type III) who do not respond adequately to diet. Lipirex is also indicated for the reduction of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when response to diet and other nonpharmacological measures are inadequate.


The patients should be placed on standard cholesterol lowering diet before receiving Lipirex and should continue this diet during treatment with Lipirex. The usual starting dose is 10mg once a day. The dosage range is 10 to 80mg once daily. Doses may be given anytime of the day with or without food.


Atorvastatin is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this medication, who have active liver diseases or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases exceeding three times the upper limit of normal, who are pregnant, who are breast-feeding, or in women of child bearing potential who are not using adequate contraceptive measures. Atorvastatin should be administered to women of child bearing age only when such patients are highly unlikely to conceive and have been informed of the potential hazards to the fetus.


Constipation, flatulence, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, headache, nausea, myalgia, asthenia, diarrhea and insomnia sometimes have been observed.

Atorvastatin is contraindicated in pregnancy and while breast-feeding.
